Alphabet Soup - Background work

Saturday, 3 October 2009

We were set a new brief on Monday called 'alphabet Soup' which was to create a 10 letter alphabet manipulating an original type face (eg, helvetica, ariel et) to fit the work we were given. I was given the word 'LAYER' - Now the most obvious thing to do with that would be just to layer different or the same types on top of one another but i wanted to steer clear of this so i started looking at layered objects and symbols which lead me to stumble across a rubix cude, made of different layered blocks of color. Immediately i started drawing things out and testing things to see what would work and because i needed an original type face i looked at 'space Invaders' because the type was blocked and could be easily manipulated.
Below shows some of my initial ideas and sketches and a little research:

Once i had settled on the Rubix cude idea i started playing around with the dimensions and whether the corners should be rounded etc.
Eventually i settled on the style i wanted and began to trace the drawings creating the letterforms i wanted. My plan was to hand draw them and scan them into Illustrator to add the color and a slightly plastic effect so that although the type looked computerized it still had the hand drawn feel.
Below shows images of me making the designs:
