Workshop - Brief Ideas

Thursday, 28 April 2011

After our workshop the other day, i decided to use the structure we created to help me work out a structure to my briefs that i want to create. My logic is to create a selection of my own briefs and then select the best to do. There are certain areas that I am more interested in then the others, for example Food. Over easter I was spending a lot of time researching for my type module and I found that i was really interested in food editorials and generally everything that goes along side it. So I am interested in bringing food into my brief somehow. There were other subjects that I am interested in too. I have broken them all down below;

All the above images a fairly self explanatory. What was good about doing this was that I can use the trend to work out what I really want to incorporate into my brief. I think I have realised through this process I want to work to a specific brief, I don't want it to be all over the place, i need to create some form of restrictions.

So taking on the two areas i was interested in food and retail, and i know that i will be working with typography i decided to spider diagram to try and break down the subject more into areas that i would find interesting and could have some strong creative outcomes. With Food there are a lot of areas within it, that a lot could be created for. I think that the most interesting areas for me, after brain storming were the ideas of:

Food and People
Food Exhibitions
Food and Culture

All three of these topics tend to overlap with each other, especially food and culture and food and people. They tend to go hand in hand.

So I decided to take the idea of food and people further. I know that at the moment there is an event coming up called 'The Peoples Banquet' and this is basically and excuse for people to get together over food and have fun together and this is the sort of style and promotion i want to encourage. Especially recently with the whole Royal Wedding, the UK is feeling a big sense of community and therefore I want to capitalise on those sort of bonds. This will bring together my interest in food and culture as well as food and people. There's a lot i could do for this brief, which i think interests me the most.

Another aspect that I am interested in is Retail. I am a huge shopping fan and therefore it seemed like a logical step to pursue my interest in a graphic way. I decided to break the subject matter down into some smaller areas. Much like food, retail has a lot of separate avenues that you could go into or combine a few. I think for me it would be the whole branding and identity that I would be more interested in creating. I then thought about the idea of creating a typographic shop. Seeing as I want to use type as my  it would be nice to create a niche shop that was all about typography. There's a lot of avenues that could be investigates with this, and not necessarily creating a shop but creating a type brand for all things type. Or creating an online resource for all things type that you can buy and sell on and get information on. There's a lot of things I could do with this.

I think for these briefs there is a lot that I can do and I have chosen subject matters that appeal to me in to completely different senses. Subject matter for me is quite key, because if I feel its engaging then I can make it engaging. Imposing restrictions on myself I think is going to be the key thing. This will also help me work out the most appropriate brief.
