Packaging Design - Cup

Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Taking inspiration from my drawings i went to the cafe and raided their cup supply to try out my concept for putting a cupcake inside a cup. I really like this concept because of the whole play on words and I think its just a novelty which goes alongside the actual shop.

When I first started designing it was really hard to get the cupcake
shelf to rest comfortably in the middle of the cup. It seemed squished.
I tried a variety of techniques, cutting down the sides, creating serrated
edges to to curve with the cup. Nothing seemed to work.

as you can see it created a really squashed base, that i don't
think would adequately support the cupcake.

I put the shelf just above the half way line of the cup so that you
would be able to see the top of the cupcake from the side. this is so
the cupcake wouldn't be completely hidden.

after having problems with the shelf i then added another disc to try and
level it off. It defiantly made it look a lot better but function wise
it would still be quite hard balance the cupcake in it and take it out.

After I had tried it with a normal cup, i then decided to take the same
shelf and add it to the plastic cups you can get from the Smoothie Company.
This was to see if it balanced better or whether it was just a design fault.

this shows the shelf with the second disc. again it created
quite an uneven base, which i dont think would support
the cupcakes.

From the side it looked like a right mess as well,
and seeing as these cups would be clear, i would need something
that fitted and looked good.

I added the lid to the top to give the idea of how it would look.
Looking at it it does look okay, you would be able to see the cupcake quite easily
and theres a lot of room for information. There is also space at the bottom to maybe create something. But i am still not sure about you been able to see within it, it seems a little too glossy and not quite what i wanted to achieve. I think this idea is strong but the functionality of the piece just doesn't work that well.
