No News is Good News... Brief - Designs

Friday 6 November 2009

This section is to show how i created my designs and the thoughts behind them. With the project i was trying to push myself with illustrator and use everything i have learned so far to create my final pieces, i want to try and give my images a professional finish. This section is looking at just the image poster.

Image Design:
(All annotation below relates to the image above it)

The final image. I have had to add two faded lines in the hand which are the same colour as the other posters due to the fact there has to be two colours in it, I'm not a big fan of doing this but i don't have enough time to work out a new idea where that colour will fit in, luckily it is light enough not to be noticed too much and wont detract from the bacteria images.
rying the hand without any lines in the middle, i found they detracted from the images of the bacteria which wasn't what i wanted. Also this design has just the right amount of bacteria. Enough to be clear what it is but not too much to completely ruin the image. I like this one and will be using it for my final image.

Trial with the final image without the lines in the middle, i prefer the way it looks but due to the fact i have to have two colours within it i don't have a choice but to put them there.
This is a design that i have heavily restricted the use of bacteria on it. I like it but i think its just too restricted and doesn't give the idea of how infectious the disease is i want the hand to appear like its crawling with disease but not overcrowd it, there just isn't enough.

With this design i was just using one type of bacteria, i wanted to use this image and try it because this style of bacteria is heavily recognized by people and therefore people would know what it is. I didn't use the other bacteria because it has a lot going on and if i layered it it would look too messy, using it occasionally on the hands works well.

This hand is way too crowded there is too much going on and too many different bacteria involved this wouldn't work as a poster. I want my designs to be simple and effective and that carry a clear message this one doesn't.

With this design i tried highlighting all the other bacteria and then changing the colour to the pale colour used on the other posters. The problem with this is it is too faint and wouldn't show up at all unless you got close to it to look at which defeats the point i am trying to prove. I will not be using this in my final design.

Experimentation with final Design Layout:

When i showed Fred my designs for the hand he said that i needed to give them some kind of a boarder to make it look like its a hospital signs, and this was because of the fact i had to keep explaining that the hands i used were from the actual hospital signs hence why they are quite a bad design. So i took his advice and tried out the border idea. I don't like it at all i think it really takes away from the hand and kind of takes away from the clinical feel of the whole poster. Although it would make sense to boarder it, i want my pieces to be visually pleasing and if i used the boarder i don't think they would be.

Above image, trying with the boarder around it. If i used the boarder this would also mean that i would be able to play with the composition as much because for it to work the sign would need to be central on the poster.
Here i have been playing with the composition of the piece, in order to see what the hands would look like in different positions. I tried putting the piece in the center but i think it looks too boring especially with the rest of the posters layouts being in different places.
