What is a line...

The next stage for my What is a line... Brief, was to start experimenting with the silhouettes of buildings and seeing the best way to represent the form of the objects. I started experimenting with the generic buildings such as the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline, both give a good variation in detail and size.

I started out by using tracing paper to create different layers of the drawing. Each layer had a different colour and would pick out different details from the image, this meant that when i put them all on top of one another you could see the whole image but also see what the different layers were within it. I really like this technique, by just drawing around the silhouette of the building meant it would be very bland and wouldn't give much dimension to the piece.
Seeing as i had also decided to screen print my final piece, having a mixture of different layers meant that i play around with distorting the skyline and making it look more abstract.
Below shows an example of what i did with the Statue of Liberty:

With this image you can see the layers working together to create the shape of the Statue of Liberty, i like having the solid outline at the front as it brings the whole form together in a more recognizable image.

Once i had done some examples with the New York skyline, and saw that my system worked i then decided to start experimenting with the Leeds skyline. I want my project to illustrate Leeds skyline because i want people to relate the the images, as they live here, seeing as my target audience was fellow students and creative people.

Below shows some experimentation i did with the Leeds University Parkinson Building, this is a very recognizable building in Leeds, its the hub of student life during the say time. It has a very large and intimidating building with a lot of strong angles, and interesting perspectives which is why i chose to experiment with it first.
I then looked at the Leeds skyline itself, i really liked the image i used because it showed the industrial side of leeds, with the huge cranes towering over the buildings. They really draw your eye to them, they give the image a different shape to just clean crisp lines.

- Parkinson Building. Like the colour palette used within this image, helps pick out the main details within the frame. It is evident what the building shows.

- Leeds City Skyline. Like the idea of the piece, think the image is a little too disjointed, the layers are too spread out but want to develop this image further.

The next stage was to look at the main buildings in Leeds, using both secondary and primary research.
