Packaging - Making

Tuesday 8 February 2011

Making this packaging was so much fun, although it did look like a coffee bomb had gone off in my bathroom. The whole point of this packaging is to look hand made and not perfect. So i had to do it as roughly as possible. I took image of the stages i made my packaging, especially the DVD protective pocket. One thing i was really happy with was the fact that the cotton had retained its smoothness for the protective pacakging, which was good because it means it wont scratch the DVD.

I started by making small puncture holes around the edge of my DVD, i did this using a puncture screw driver i had, this was good because it frayed the edges as it went through. After this i went along each hole punching it through with a thicker screw driver so i could fit the string through later.
The next stage was sewing the side up with the string i had. This proved quite difficult, because the holes were rough the string kept fraying as it went through. So i had to burn the end to a point to punch through the hole.
I then did the same for the other side. Once i got the hang of it, it proved very easy to do and quite satisfying. The only problem was the whole packaging smelt of coffee. If it produced for commercial use it would be screen printed taking away the smell

After i had created the protective packaging the next stage was to use cut the material i was going to use to wrap the whole packaging.

This process was fairly easy i just cut down the best parts from the larger sheet i had made. I then folded it around the packaging. These images show the way it would be unwrapped. I haven't added to string yet to wrap it because i need thicker string. But it gives you the idea of what you would find inside.

Overall i am really happy with the style of this packaging, it relates to my project well. The style is similar and it adds another element to the overall product. I also like the fact that there is a lot of interaction with the piece for the person using it/unwrapping it. Having different textures contrasting also adds another interaction element. The next stage is to work out what needs to go onto the disc cover..

And to try and get it to stop smelling of coffee......
