Billboard Concept and Design.

Thursday 4 November 2010

After looking into all my UV research, its time for me to start developing. I looked through my notes and picked ou the main information i wanted to use on my billboard concept. I want the facts to be catchy and not long so you can read them as you drive past. The general idea is that at night, a set of black-lites will flash every 30 secounds or so and light up information and images on the billboard. This is working on the idea that the sex trafficking trade is hidden and i am shinning light on the situation. Using a blacklite is also quite seedy as they use it within the industry anyway..clean sheets etc.

I want to incorporate a girls face into the design so that it is more personal to the viewer and it reiterates the point to who ever is reading the fact or the statistic. essentially it makes it more real.

I began sketching some really basic layouts just give myself an idea of what i am creating and what i want to incorporate. Each design has an evaluation below:

1. With this design i think it is all a little too small
to be put on a billboard and be read effectively.
i have to bare in mind that the majority of time
when you see a billboard you are driving past
so the designs and images really need to
stand out.
2. I like the idea of this design, the idea of the faces
along the top and the type under the image.
What does worry me is that if you were passing it
then you would just see the faces and therefore you
wouldn't necessarily see the text. Although the
amount of faces works with a large statistic
because its highlighting a lot of girls instead of just
one solitary woman.

3. here i am using half the face instead of the full image.
This time i think the text out weighs the image, and
i want them both to work together. But i do like the idea
and i think i will develop this further in order
to see its full potential.

4. This is one of my favorite ideas. it's very simple.
It shows the girls face and the text and i want my
designs to be as simple as possible, so that they
are in-keeping with the packaging idea. With the
full face being shown it means that you can see the
emotion and recognise the pain/lost look on the womans
face.

5. Here i have just developed the 4th idea further.
It show's the girls face and what it would look like
with the information not on it. I think it's going to
be important to keep something on the billboards
at all times in order for people to not think its just some
big white billboard with nothing about it.
But i am not sure yet and i need to see what i would
look like in development. Even if it means just keeping
the logo on it at all times.

6. Here i have just played with the idea of having the
type layered over the face. It does work in pen the only
problem is using the UV paint would make it slightly
see through which would mean you wouldn't be able to
see the text or face properly. again i am going to to have
to try this out in order to fully see the potential.

With this last sheet basically i was trying to see how i would print the face using UV paints. the problem with printing in UV it doesn't give you a lot of tones to work with or hues so it would mean that the face would have to be all block coloured, which i don't think would look very good. This does restrict me slightly in how i will use the face and how it can be printed and its a factor that will change some of my designs.
